Uber launched self-driving vehicles in Pittsburgh

Uber had announced that they are testing their self-driving car in Pittsburgh before three months, and now Uber finally declared the launching of semi-autonomous cars on the streets as early as this month. Uber's Self-driving car is already a buzzing word among mobile apps development companies USA and other technological firms.

Uber will allow customers in Pittsburgh to summon self-driving cars from their phones. Google has been testing its fleet for several years, and Tesla Motors Autopilot software has been slowly increasing its functionality, essentially a souped-up cruise control that drives the car on the highway. Also recently Ford announced plans for an autonomous ride-sharing service.

Report from Bloomberg says that the test fleet will consists of specially modified Volvo XC90 SUVs, with each car supervised by one engineer in the driver’s seat who can take the wheel as/when needed as well as co-pilot to take down the observations. There will also be a “liquid-cooled” computer sitting in the trunk recording trip and map data. Volvo cars have delivered a handful of vehicles out of 100 due by the end of the year. Passengers will get their ride free who take the experimental self-driving cars.

The Volvo deal is not exclusive. As it requires more engineers, Uber plans to partner with other automakers. This is the reason Uber acquired Otto. Otto is a 91 employee driverless truck start-up that was founded earlier this year. They are having engineers from a number of high profile tech companies attempting to bring driverless cars on the streets. This includes Google, Apple, and Tesla. Uber kept secret the terms of arrangement, but a person familiar with the deal reveals that if the targets are met, it would be worth 1 percent of Uber’s most recent valuation. That would be about $680 million.

The company was founded by former Googlers Anthony Levandowski, Lior Ron, Don Burnette, and Claire Delaunay. Levandowski led Google’s self-driving car efforts, Ron was an executive on Google Maps and Motorola, while others have worked with Apple, Tesla and other notable automotive firms. Now Levandowski is ready to lead Uber’s driverless car efforts. Also two new R&D centres will open up to speed the technology’s development. Otto’s LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor technology detects infrared emissions to monitor speed, which is geared to be adapted for use in Uber’s autonomous vehicles.

Otto’s founders were key members of Google’s operation, who decamped in January. Levandowski told Bloomberg in giving the reason why he left Google – “We were really excited about building something that could be launched early”. It shows the frustration with the slow speed of development from Google’s self driving project.Uber, it seems more excited to move forward with self-driving at a faster-pace.
